Monteverde Music Festival Anna, March 24, 2013April 13, 2013 Costa Ricans possess an undeniably strong love for music. The Ticos love it, adore it, appreciate it and live by it in their day to day lives. They know how to party hard and groove to the beats as the music flares up and they know how to take it slow and sassy when the beat gentles itself. The proof for their eternal adoration can be witnessed in their yearly calendars where one after another we find festivals solely for music. One such festival has been making history for over a decade. The Monteverde Music Festival is an annual festival that takes place at Bromelias Music Garden and the Monteverde Institute anywhere between December and March. The community of Monteverde has always been known for composing, promoting and appreciating the art of melody. They have a sense to endorse not just their own musical talent but also hail the flair of other amazing musicians of the world. The festival dates back to 1992, when a brilliant musician from Canada, Margaret Adelman started to bring classical musicians from San Jose to the Villa for a festival that went on for four months. The music lovers would then hike up to the hills towards the Villa three times a week and immerse themselves in the beautiful melodies that stirred from sunset till late night. This went on year after year under different management committees and at different locations. The profit from these performances went for organizing more musical events and buying instruments for schools of the region. Eventually musicians other than classical started to pour in by 1998-1999 and the event started catering to music fans of every genre. The event was then taken to the Monteverde Institute. From year 2000, the festival belonged to the Monteverde Institute but it eventually petered out. It was then by the efforts of Gloria Waissbluth, a previous director of Symphonic Youth Orchestra of Costa Rica who organized live music concerts at Galeron Cultural Center and Patricia Maynard who built the Amphitheater, that the Music Festival was revived and has been celebrated ever since. The festival aims to celebrate, discover and bring the best of music to Monteverde. It takes pride in still offering the greatest of Jazz and Classical music along with other genres such as the traditional Afro Caribbean and Latin American. It brings national and international musicians and stages them to glory. It discovers the finest of talents and gives them the lime light they clearly deserve. The show compromises of around 15 acts in total. The major attraction is always the breathtaking atmosphere that surrounds the shows. The show begins with the sunset and goes into the night making the experience truly magical. This year the festival showcased performances from famed artists and musicians like Latin Editus, Jazz Rumba, Orquesto de Percusion, Latina Ensamble, La Big Band, Duo de Guitarras and Son de Tiquizia. Not only has this festival successfully brought great music to the crowd but it has also supported many schools in funding for their instruments and bringing for their children the finest teachers to cultivate their talents. When in Costa Rica, make this festival a date and get ready to spend the best ten dollars in the name of music!
